This is a bit of a cheat, really, because I read a large portion of this book in 2009. However, I got busy and finished it this year, so I'm counting it!
I first picked up Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses while I was attending a course on Political Islam. Of course I was familiar with the book before but hadn't been inspired to actually pick it up until I read a bit more about the controversy surrounding it. Then it remained on my shelf month after month until I noticed my mom had started reading her own copy. I'd managed to convince myself that the book would be too challenging to be bothered with, especially so soon after finishing Moby Dick. But if my mom could be arsed to start it, so could I.
